I bought this synth because the original model (the one with a keyboard) was frequently praised for its clever UX, powerful sound editing, and the stock presets. The commonly-cited drawback was the keyboard itself, as it was fairly limited, and not especially well-made. The rack version solves this by letting you plug your own MIDI keyboard, which I did. I’m definitely not an experienced synth player, and while I’ve worked in some FM VSTs, like the Native Instruments FM8, I won’t pretend that I usually know what I’m doing. As such, I sadly can’t go into a lot of depth here. What I can say is that this synth is attractive, and reasonably-well built. It makes FM synthesis fairly approachable even to people like me, and the 256(!) stock presets cover a wide range of classic and experimental sounds. I’m not a classically-trained pianist, and if you are, you’d get a lot more out of this than me: an experienced pianist will be able to fully leverage the nuanced dynamics and complex velocity layers of this FM synth. It definitely benefits from a proper keyboard, and the rack version makes a lot of sense. This said, even if you are like me, with a ‘John Carpenter range’ of simple one-handed melodies, you’ll love the Korg for its clear, controlled tones, and intricate layering of parameters. You can tell how much effort the R&D team put into this instrument, and it feels like a labour of love. There are the aforementioned presets to get you started, but it’s not hard to start working on your custom presets. The built-in sequencer is good. The drum sounds will put most drum machines to shame. It also has a ‘Random’ button, to help you come with ideas, and even takes DX7 patches (although apparently they don’t quite sound the same on the Korg).

Love the simplicity of the user interface while being a powerful synth with so many tools for sound exploration. I reckon it will take me some time to get the most out of it. If you just use it for FM sounds then you are barely scratching the surface, it can do so much more.

Es ist im Grunde ein Verbrechen, diesen Synth als «Altered FM»-Synth zu vermarkten, da viele einfach schon bei «FM» gedanklich und emotional aussteigen. Das wird diesem fantastischen Gerät aber überhaupt nicht gerecht. Im Grunde müsste man sagen: «All Terrain Synth». Der Opsix ist im Grunde ein 80fach polyphoner digitaler Synth mit 6 extrem vielseitigen Oszillatoren, die sowohl hörbar gemacht als auch als Modulationsquellen eingesetzt werden können. Beides im übrigen auf Wunsch auch gleichzeitig! Er kann FM, Ringmodulation (AM), Filtermodulation und Wave Folding, hat aber auch einen pro «Operator» (wie die Klang-/Modulationserzeuger hier heißen) konfigurierbaren Filtermodus, sowohl mit klassischen 2pole/4pole-Filtermodellen als auch mit berühmten Vorbildern nachempfundenen Filtertypen (z.B. dem MS 20). Zudem hat er auch noch einen globalen, ebenso vielfältigen Filter, der über alles – auch über FM-Sounds – drübergepackt werden kann. Sehr nice. Die Modulationsmatrix ist eine der besseren mir bekannten, mit der man z.B. auch solche Dinge tun kann wie den Feedback-Anteil eines «Operators» von einem Envelope oder LFO steuern zu lassen. -> Filter-typische Sounds… auch ohne Filter. Innerhalb von drei Nachmittagen hatte in den Synth komplett verstanden und nun bin ich einfach nur noch hin und weg von den Möglichkeiten und der Sound-Qualität. Dadurch, dass ich die Operatoren eben auch einfach klassisch als Sawtooth verwenden kann mit einem saftigen Lowpass-Filter hintendrauf, mit bis zu 8 Oszillatoren pro Stimme, jeweils leicht detuned und mit «Spread» im Stereofeld verteilt, habe ich damit bereits klassische «Analog»-Sounds nach Vorbild der subtraktiven Synthese gebaut, die richtig geil satt («warm») klingen, ähnlich einem analogen Klassiker. Aber durch die vorhandenen Modulations- und Kombinationsmöglichkeiten kann ich sie halt einfach auch noch ein Stück darüber hinaus verfeinern – wenn ich Lust dazu hab. Warmes analog-style Pad, aber mit glockenähnlichem Ringmod-Attack? Kein Problem. Für einen der Brass-Sounds, die ich mit dem Opsix erstellt habe, werde ich in Zukunft wohl meine analogen Geräte diesbezüglich nicht mehr bemühen. Echt krass. Hätte ich nie gedacht. Kurz gesagt: der Opsix ist mein neuer Lieblings-Synth – er löst damit meinen UDO Super 6 als meinen «Einsame-Insel-Synth» ab. Dürfte ich nur einen Synth behalten, es wäre der Opsix. Und das ganze auch noch als 19″-Rack-Unit. Nicht zu übertreffen.

Ich hatte alle , vom DX1 DX5 ,TX 816. Alle waren vom Klang fantastisch, aber für mich ohne Editor nicht zu bedienen. Vom Klang und der Verarbeitung ,würde ich daher ,den Digiton von Elektron vorziehen. Da ich technisch nicht sehr interessiert bin, ist eine einfache Bedienung das entscheidende Kriterium. Elektron 100 %, Kodamo 80% und Opsix 78% besser als ein “Plug in”. Verarbeitung ist für den Preis ok . Die Effekte sind nichts besonderes.
